Ode to Bhagat Singh

You have taken over our hearts
You rule our minds
Flow in our veins
You rightly said that ideas can’t be chained.

The air is filled with fragrance of your thoughts
This redolence is eternal
And you are immortal.

Why did you endure the excruciating pain?
Without the want of any personal gain
It wasn’t bestowed on you by fortune
You could have easily escaped the gallows
But you didn’t
You laid your life for your fellows.

You said that you were full of ambition ,hope and charm of life
The dreams in your eyes sparkled wide
But why did you renounce it all
And chose the path full of thorns
For want of a future in which you wouldn’t be even alive.

You shunned the warmth of bed
Abandoned the delicacies which your mother fed
Leaving sweet chidings of your father
Breaking the sweet and sour bond of love with siblings
Inhuming the fears and hiding the tears
You marched off away from home
Well aware of the crucifixion ahead.

Sights of mutilated people made you fret
The inhuman massacre of the innocents made your eyes wet
Nation’s derogatory state boiled your blood, your heart ached
Determined to end this soon
Fearlessly you challanged the throne
Making them realize that their end is near
Trembling on chairs they were filled with fear.

People affirm that hunger drives us mad
But even after starving for months
How were you so calm, compassionate and benovalent lad.
To improve the conditions of the people in cell
You survived the brutal ordeal with empty stomach in that hell.

They inflicted on you inhuman pain
Tore your body,pierced you skin
But all in vain
Cuz the valor and fortitude you possessed even when chained
Drowned their heads in shame
Defeated the ones who were in reign.

You were an avid reader,
A revolutionary writer with lion’s heart
You made books your guide
Fought for them , strived for them
Your thoughts flew freely on pages of eternity
Leaving imprints on the sands of time.

They thought they’ve confined you in prison
Where you’ll annihilate with all your vision
Little did they know how easily they’ll fail
Cuz you were such a gallant who was free even in jail.

The word of death brings shiver even to the bravest heart
But you took it as a Reward
When few days left of doom
Would have driven anyone in gloom
You were chirpy and effervescent as the new moon.

Taking all the bestial torture and endless strife
You cheered up all your companions in plight
Infusing in them new life
Though imprisoned in dark, you were full of light.
Had no anger or revenge in your heart
Witnessing your insurmountable spirit those beasts were replete with fright.

With smiling face you embraced the gallows
Your kissing the noose made even the brutal torturers bow down and mellow
Fortunate were those who witnessed the sight
Chanting along with you the slogans of nation’s pride
The universe echoed with your thundering voice.

Death like yours is never the end
As Legends Never Die
They rule the minds and breathe in the hearts
They become a star in the sky!
